Across the town, you can see a connection to its great industrial heritage. No more so than at Wigan Pier. Made famous by George Orwell, this now quiet and peaceful spot, next to the Leeds & Liverpool canal, is perfect for walks along the canal. Wigan is a town that values its great open spaces too. Commonly called a jewel nestled on the edge of Wigan town centre, Mesnes Park is a must-visit. Having recently undergone a multi-million-pound restoration, it has now been restored to its former Victorian glory and includes formal gardens, a waterfall and lake, an impressive bandstand and a pavilion.
One of the big attractions in the area is the famous Knowsley Safari Park. Home to the longest safari drives in the UK, the 5-mile route takes you through troops of baboons and a pride of lions. If you don’t want to take your own car, you can jump on the Baboon Bus. There’s even a Foot Safari which gets you up close to some amazing animals.
