Life at Cable Wharf - Twelve hours in Gravesend
Gravesend is a beautiful, riverside town steeped in history and located in North West Kent. Our Cable Wharf development sits right on the outskirts, making it the perfect place to go and have a wander around when you’ve got a spot of free time.
Read on to discover the best things to add to your Gravesend to-do list, including parks, local landmarks and the best restaurants and cafes to whet your appetite.
8am: Wake up in your new home at Cable Wharf, Northfleet. Glance out of the window at the beautiful River Thames and white chalk cliffs and get ready for your day of exploring the local area.
10am: Walk into Gravesend, which will take about 20 minutes, or if you prefer cycling, that should take around ten. Your journey will take you via the scenic route, along the stunning banks of the River Thames where you’ll spot fine architecture and unique spots of interest, full of history and culture. Of course, you could always drive, which would take only five minutes, and there are several well-placed car parks to choose from in the town centre.
You could pick up a coffee on the way from Costa or one of the many local cafes like J Sandwich Bar, and maybe pop into a few shops for a little retail therapy. You’ll pass Imperial Retail Park, home to shops such as Pets at Home, Dreams and B&Q, as well as a collection of other supermarkets, bookshops and health and beauty stores.
12pm: Work up an appetite for lunch with a walk around some of the stunning countryside that this part of the world has to offer. Woodlands Park, Windmill Hill, Gravesend Promenade and the Riverside Leisure Area are all nearby and provide a dose of beautiful scenery and nature. If you’ve cycled, why not go give Cyclopark a try? With plenty of sports clubs nearby including football, rugby, golf and cricket, there may also be the opportunity to watch and cheer from the side-lines, if you’d prefer.
If history and culture are more your thing, there is a multitude of historic places of worship, buildings full of heritage and references to icons with historic links to the area. There’s a statue of Pocahontas, marking her burial place at St George’s Church, and one of Charles Dickens who drew inspiration for some of his novels from the area.
2pm: Time to grab a late lunch. There are plenty of quaint, independent cafes, restaurants and pubs for you to choose from, or for something a little more mainstream, there’s a range of sushi, fish and chip and sandwich chains to enjoy. Wherever you choose, we’d recommend Creams Café for dessert – rated very highly by locals for their delicious variety of waffles, sundaes and crepes.
4pm: To continue exploring, head over to Gravesend Borough Market, which is a treasure trove of traders covering everything from antiques and clothing to cosmetics and home décor. Pay a visit to Auntie’s Treasures or Safia’s Beauty Bar or satisfy that afternoon tummy rumble at Sweetarian for an old fashion pic ‘n’ mix. You could even grab a latte to go from Chrystal’s Speciality Coffee & Kitchen and head down to the pier to relax and watch the world go by.
6pm: As dusk approaches, why not head over to The Woodville and catch a show before heading home? Theatre or cinema, whatever your preference, there’ll be something on to tickle your fancy and end your day out on a high.
8pm: If you’re not quite finished and want to extend the night even further, grab a drink and a bite to eat at Clarendon Royal Hotel just around the corner, and when it’s time to head home, there are plenty of buses to catch or taxis to call for a short journey back to your new community.
