Lenton students lay foundations for success with street art competition
Six budding artists from Nottingham University Academy of Science and Technology (NUAST) have been crowned winners for their joint submission in Keepmoat's street art competition.
Students from Year 7, 8 and 9 at the specialist STEM academy were challenged with creating street art boards focused on ‘communities’ and ‘heritage’, giving them the opportunity to showcase creativity and imaginative skills.
After completing their submissions, the students had the opportunity to talk through their ideas and explain the meaning behind their work at a launch event, attended by an expert judging panel.
Judges included a representative from Nottingham Community Housing Association (NHCA) and local councillor Linda Woodings, who together crowned a colourful submission designed by six students in Year 9 the winner.
Dave Thompson, Head Teacher at NUAST, commented: “We are incredibly proud of the work our students have undertaken in partnership with Keepmoat East Midlands and Nottingham Community Housing Association. Their project brilliantly refl ects the values that underpin our school and showcases what it means to be a values-driven, multicultural school at the heart of its community.
“Through their work, students highlighted our school alongside places of cultural and social signifi cance across the city, bringing our core values to life and celebrating the diversity and strength of our community.
“We are extremely grateful to our partners at Keepmoat East Midlands and Nottingham Community Housing Association, as well as to the judges, for their support and recognition of the students' achievements. Winning this special competition is a fantastic accomplishment, and we are immensely proud of all the students involved.”
All submissions showcased creativity, with murals depicting a rich mix of local references, including Nottingham Forest Football Club, Nottingham lace, Robin Hood, the Savoy Cinema, Ningbo Friendship Bridge, local NHS and Lenton Boulevard.
The winning artwork was displayed at national real estate event UKREiiF last month and will be installed as a permanent feature at the school, which was selected by the developer due to its close proximity to its new Faraday Fields development - Keepmoat's fi rst partnership project with NCHA.
Laura Grainger, Social Value Manager at Keepmoat East Midlands, added: “It was a pleasure to meet with the students at NUAST and discuss the incredible artwork they had created. We had huge involvement from years seven, eight and nine and it was great to see so many local references included across the work.
“At Keepmoat, we are committed to engaging with local communities to create vibrant neighbourhoods where people want to live while protecting and enhancing local green spaces and ecology. We look forward to progressing our partnership with NCHA.”
Once completed, the Faraday Fields development will offer 69 homes, providing much-needed housing in the local area, comprising a mix of social rent and shared ownership homes, including one‑bed maisonettes and two‑ and three‑bed family homes.
Anya Lyons, Project Manager at NCHA, added: “We’re excited to embark on our fi rst partnership with Keepmoat, creating much-needed affordable housing in the heart of Lenton. The art competition with NUAST was created to engage the local community, showcase creativity and celebrate the character of Lenton and wider Nottingham.”
