‘Inspiring’ Preston teen secures dream job in construction
A Preston teenager living with learning difficulties has spoken about how his life has ‘changed forever’ after securing his first job as a trainee scaffolder.
Max Dodds, 19, has been offered his dream role with Enigma Industrial Services following months of paid work experience supported by top 10 UK housebuilder, Keepmoat.
The Preston-based teenager, who lives with moderate learning difficulties, studied construction at Sir Tom Finney Community High School - a specialist setting for young people with a broad spectrum of additional needs.
As he approached the end of his education, his headteacher reached out to top 10 housebuilder, Keepmoat, after a connection was made at the Lancashire Inclusion Summit, seeking opportunities for Max to gain hands-on experience.
With support from Keepmoat’s regional Social Value Manager, Max was invited to interview for a work placement position with Enigma Industrial Services. The housebuilder worked closely with Max and his school to help him prepare for the interview, ensuring he felt confident and supported throughout the process.
Following a successful interview, Max began a paid work placement, attending two days per week alongside his studies. His commitment, enthusiasm, and growing skillset quickly impressed the team, leading to a full-time job offer when he completed his studies.
Julie Baker, Social Value Manager at Keepmoat, North West explains: “From the moment I met Max, his passion for construction was clear. His dedication, work ethic, and eagerness to learn made him stand out. We worked closely with Sir Tom Finney Community High School to identify opportunities with our subcontractors, and it was evident Max had the potential to thrive as a scaffolder.”
Max has now begun a full-time role with Enigma, where he will complete a trainee scaffolding course to earn a professional qualification.
Julie added: “Max’s journey is a powerful example of what can be achieved through community collaboration and inclusive employment practices. We were proud to share his story at this year’s Lancashire Inclusion Summit, highlighting how partnerships can empower more young people to enter the industry with confidence and purpose.”

Reflecting on his new role, Max said: “Scaffolding has always interested me, and I’ve always wanted to work in construction. I’m excited to start this new chapter. The support I’ve received has meant a lot, especially as I learn best through a mix of practical work and theory. This trainee role is the perfect fit.”
“After struggling with a normal school routine, I now go to bed excited and wake up ready and raring to attend my work experience, so securing an apprenticeship is something I’m really pleased with. My life has changed forever!”
