Staying safe as the nights draw in
With the clocks set to go back at the end of the month (Sunday 26th October), evenings will become darker, making road safety a key topic of conversation with children.
At Keepmoat, our focus on creating new homes extends beyond just bricks and mortar. We are dedicated to developing inclusive spaces for everyone to enjoy, fostering thriving communities with strong public transport links, cycle paths and walking routes. Our developments are situated near essential amenities, such as schools, to promote active travel for residents.
In this month's blog, we will explore tips and tricks for keeping children safe during the darker evenings, focusing on raising awareness of the importance of road safety.
Staying visible and reflective
To stay safe and visible on the road at night, bright reflective clothing is a great starting point. Accessories such as reflective armbands, clip on lights, reflectors and hi-vis vests can significantly improve visibility for drivers.
At Keepmoat, our Social Value Managers actively donate hi-vis gear to local schools to enhance safety. Most recently, our West Midlands team donated an array of high-visibility vests to Blanford Mere Primary School following a site safety visit.
Bright and fluorescent clothing is also effective during dull or gloomy weather, as it enhances visibility. However, it is important to note that this visibility is only effective in daylight and dusk, not in complete darkness.
Another fun and engaging way to boost visibility in the dark is by using reflective stickers and tags.

Choosing the best route
As the nights grow darker, it's important to consider choosing alternative routes that are well-lit by streetlights or other sources. If better-lit paths aren't available, carrying a torch can significantly improve visibility.
If your child is walking home from school or travelling alone, it's a good idea to encourage them to stick to familiar, well-lit routes, use designated crossings, avoid shortcuts and stay away from areas with poor lighting.

Learning road safety practices
It’s important to teach children about road safety so they are prepared, understand the basics and feel confident when navigating roads. The Green Cross Code is an effective way to guide children on how to cross roads safely. It involves five simple steps: stop, look, listen, wait and then walk.
By incorporating these practices into regular conversations and activities, we can encourage a generation of safe, aware and responsible road users - providing peace of mind and confidence.

We’d love to hear the ways you’re staying road safe this winter - use #Keepmoat to connect with us.
