Earth Day: Our Power, Our Planet

Taking place on the 22nd April, Earth Day is the international day for reflecting and taking part in environmental action. This year’s theme is all about encouraging renewable energy – with the slogan “our power, our planet”.
Today provides the perfect opportunity to sit back and think about what you can do to help preserve the planet for generations to come. In this blog we detail the steps we’re taking to help tackle climate change.
How we’re making a difference
Homebuilding is increasingly making a difference in Britain’s energy transition.
Traditionally, UK homes are powered with gas for heating, hot water and cooking, and diesel is used in the construction process.
But the new build housing industry is innovating, reducing energy demand by becoming more efficient, and transitioning away from fossil fuels towards lower-carbon electricity.
Here’s how we are taking action:
- Since 2022, a regulations update means new build homes being sold now are even better insulated and often incorporate solar PV panels, bringing energy bills down. From November 2024 to January 2025, 34% of Keepmoat’s sold homes were A-rated for energy performance.
- At Keepmoat, we’re at the forefront of trialling all-electric and low carbon homes for the mass market – such as at Gedling Green, Nottingham and Winterstoke Gate, Weston-Super-Mare.
- At Gedling Green we’re working with Birmingham City University to understand how customers are experiencing all new all-electric solutions such as air source heat pumps.
- In the construction process we’re using battery storage technology to reduce fuel on many of our very new sites which don’t yet have utilities connections – though a mains connection is always the best option.
- All the electricity we use directly as a business is on renewable tariffs.
How you can make a difference
If you want to reduce your carbon footprint, here are some simple tips.
- Using less energy is always the best option – for example by switching off appliances not in use.
- Otherwise, shifting your electricity use to between late night and early morning through timer switches will help to ensure you are using electricity at it’s greenest (source: WWF).
- It’s always worth checking in now and again to see if your energy provider is providing the best price – sometimes you can choose a greener supply and also save on bills!
