Back to school: Maintaining a routine past the first two weeks
As children across the UK enjoy the first few weeks back at school, parents are balancing the school run with lunch prep and getting back into routine.
Once the dust settles and the first two weeks of term have been and gone, that’s when the benefit of established routines comes into play. Here are our top tips to make sure the rest of the school year is as smooth as the first few weeks!
1. Meal prep lunches
Getting ahead with meal prepping is one of the simplest ways to make the school year feel calmer and more organised. By setting aside time to prepare healthy lunches, you can wave goodbye to rushed mornings and last-minute sandwich scrambles.
Keepmoat homes make it even easier, with thoughtfully designed, spacious kitchens, you have all the room you need to lay out ingredients, cook delicious meals and store everything efficiently.
With modern appliances and smart storage built in, you’ll have all the kit on hand for stress-free batch cooking.
2. Keep prepping the night before
A little preparation every evening can make all the difference in the morning. This can typically be something that stops after the first few weeks, but doing these simple things (or asking the children to!) is a great way to minimise the morning rush.
● Lay out uniforms and shoes
● Pack school bags with homework and signed forms
● Pop everything by the door, ready to grab and go
Across our developments, our homes include spacious entrance ways and practical utility rooms, so there’s plenty of space to get organised.

3. Walk or cycle when you can
As October looms and the hour sets to go back, lighter mornings will be a thing of the past. If your school is within a reasonable distance, walking or cycling while you can is a fantastic way to start the day. It’s great for physical health and offers a calm moment to chat before lessons begin.
Many of our developments are designed with safe walkways and cycle paths, making it easier and more enjoyable to swap the car ride for a morning stroll or pedal.
4. Creating an evening routine
Creating a specific timeframe for unwinding can be key to processing a hectic school day! Nurturing a warm and inviting environment for your child to return to after school can help the evening routine run smoothly.
Why not head outside to a local green space or park, created as part of our sustainable developments, to enjoy the great outdoors and burn off any extra energy!
