Walk to School Week

How important is fresh air ahead of the school day?
Living within walking distance to a good school is a priority for a lot of parents, and Walk to School Week is the perfect opportunity to make the most of the morning school run.
At Keepmoat, our focus on creating new homes extends beyond just bricks and mortar, we are dedicated to developing inclusive spaces that everyone can enjoy, fostering thriving communities with strong public transport links to support active travel for residents.
With Walk to School Week quickly approaching (May 20th-24th), in this blog we explore the benefits of walking and how we can inspire children to participate.
What is ‘Walk To School Week’?
Walk to School Week is a five-day walking challenge encouraging children to walk or cycle to school, encouraging a healthier and more sustainable commute. More than 350,000 pupils across the UK take part in the challenge with the main aim being to encourage an active lifestyle.
This year, the theme is ‘The Great Space Walk’, which features colourful intergalactic visuals, to help pupils learn about the importance of walking or cycling to school and how it benefits both their community and the planet.
What are the benefits?
Walking or cycling to and from school offers lots of mental and physical health benefits, especially if a lot of time is spent in front of screens. Getting outside first thing helps children start their day in a positive and productive way, which can improve their focus and concentration in the classroom, reduce stress and enhance their learning experience.
Changing the way children commute to school also makes it easier for them to develop an active routine, which comes with a variety of advantages, such as developing strong bones and improving cognitive function.
When children walk to school from a young age, they are more likely to develop good habits that encourage independence, road safety awareness and an enjoyment of exercise leading to a healthier lifestyle. Additionally, walking to school with your child provides valuable one-on-one time to bond and socialise.
How can you get involved?
Getting involved is simple! Many of our Keepmoat developments are located close to local schools, making it easy to walk to school regularly. If you live further away and walking isn’t possible, why not consider parking your car a few streets away from the school and walking the rest of the way.
You can also take part by going for an after school walk or bike ride, or even enjoying a wildlife walk as the weather improves and summer approaches! Just a brisk walk a few times a week can positively change and encourage children to make the most of the outdoors and their local environment.
