Walk to School Week (20-25th May)

Walk to School Week is an annual walking challenge that aims to encourage more children to walk and stay active. At Keepmoat, creating new homes is about more than bricks and mortar, it’s about creating inclusive spaces that everyone can enjoy.
Valuing open spaces and connectivity is integral to creating new communities that thrive. We prioritise developments with the ability to have links to public transport and active travel such as walking, close to town areas, schools, and other community areas.
With the awareness week quickly approaching (20-25th May), in this blog we take a deep dive into Walk to School Week, its benefits, and how we can encourage children to take part.
What is ‘Walk To School Week’?
Walk to School Week is a five-day walking challenge encouraging children to walk to school and fulfil their exercise requirements. More than 350,000 pupils across the UK take part in the challenge with the main aim being to encourage healthy lifestyles. Children can partake in many ways from walking to cycling or driving and walking.
What are the benefits?
Walking to and from school has so many mental and physical health benefits. For one, walking to school gives children a positive and productive start to the day, improving focus and concentration in school and generally setting the day off on the right foot. This also helps children to easily meet their exercise goal, developing strong bones, improving cognitive function, and mood.
Walking to school from a young age allows children to develop good habits, choosing to walk where they can in the future. Walking with your child to school also allows you to have some one-on-one social time.
How can you get involved?
Many schools across the country promote walking to school during the awareness week. It’s easy to get involved, many of our developments are situated close to local schools making it easy to walk to school regularly, however, if you’re located further away and this isn’t possible, you could try leaving your car a few streets away from school to get a brisk walk in. Any walking time contributes and will be a big step in positive improvements.
