National Apprenticeship Week – Benefits of Working with Young People
At Keepmoat Homes, apprenticeships are extremely important to us, and we’re committed to inspiring and training the next generation.
We have always placed work experience and apprenticeships high on our priority list as we aim to provide students with an opportunity to gain an in-depth knowledge of the construction industry, work with skilled employees and contractors, grow their skill set and experience, and ultimately make educated career choices.
Apprentices are often enthusiastic, highly motivated to learn and bring fresh ideas with them along with the most up to date skills taught throughout their training. During an apprenticeship, students gain first-hand experience in their chosen career path, whether that’s working on a live housing development, in HR or marketing at our head office or working in sales or customer service in our regional teams.
The theme for this year’s National Apprenticeship Week is ‘Building the Future’ and we’re taking the opportunity to highlight and celebrate the achievements of our apprentices across the business.
A great example comes from our North East region, where we are proud to have partnered with New College Durham since January 2018 to combat the construction skills shortage in the area. We recently reached a key milestone having supported over 50 apprenticeships and work placements from the college, as well as delivering workshops and site visits for over 100 students and joining forces to complete community projects to benefit groups and organisations in areas local to our developments.
Recent collaborations include building an outdoor classroom for the children at Coxhoe Primary School, as well as the decoration of gym areas at Coxhoe Active Life Centre, which are close to our Hampton Green development.
Tyler Louth, a second-year joinery apprentice, is currently working with the team on site at Elder Gardens, alongside the Art and Design and Engineering departments at New College Durham to create a piece of artwork to depict the local wildlife around the development, due to be completed and erected later this year.
To celebrate our partnership with New College Durham, we have added new hoardings at our Elder Gardens, The Fell and Hampton Green developments, showcasing the social value we have delivered together in the area. Our Elder Gardens development alone has generated £4,103,294 in total social value (the quantification of the difference that a socially minded investment is making) to the local area with the help of local suppliers and workforce.
As a company, we are also proud to be supporting women in construction and strive to inspire more to get into the industry. Samantha Dent, a construction trainee in our Southern region, has been able to gain a hands-on understanding of the day to day running of a construction site, as well as broadening her knowledge through various training courses. Sam is currently enrolled on the Site Management Development Programme and has been nominated to begin the NHBC Site Supervisor apprenticeship which will enable her to accomplish her ambition of becoming at Site Manager here at Keepmoat Homes.
