Key items your home needs this summer
Summer is officially here and we couldn’t be happier! With the arrival of warmer weather and brighter days ahead, we’ve put together the ultimate list of key items you should have in your home to really make the most of the season.
It’s a given that you’re going to need some light-weight bedding now that the nights are getting warmer and giving your sheets a makeover can freshen up the whole room. So stow away your 13 tog duvet and bring out the barely-there blankets for a sound night’s sleep.
Top tip: Linen and cotton are both ideal fabrics for sleeping in the heat, and the natural fibres will keep you cool throughout the night.
To make your slumber even more serene, invest in a room or desk fan – and if you make sure it’s light and portable, it can keep you comfortable wherever you are in your home.
Summer is the perfect time to inject colour into your interiors through bright accessories and seasonal prints.
You don’t need to redecorate your whole house but some subtle changes could make the world of difference - for example these Multicoloured Stackable Tealight Holders from Debenhams or this Geo Diamond Rug from Next could really brighten up your living room.
Bring the outside in with flowers and indoor plants. Aside from just looking nice, they are natural air purifiers and provide cleaner air in your home as well as brightening up the room and your mood!
Whether it’s a bunch of flowers in a vase, a hanging planter or a potted cactus, bringing some life indoors can also complement your interior design by matching or contrasting colours.
There are so many fresh, fruity and floral fragrances in the form of reed diffusers, candles and room sprays to fill your home with this summer. House Beautiful have put together a list of the best - take a look here.
No summer day is complete without a few treats from the freezer, so make sure you invest in some funky ice cube trays and lolly moulds so you can make your own. There’s a vast array of designs such as this Unicorn Freeze Pops Tray from The Range or Lakeland’s Reusable Fruit Ice Cubes. There’s also plenty of fun to be had with this Lego Ice Cube Tray from John Lewis, ideal for budding builders.
Why not get creative and add a little fruit to your ice cubes? It’s the perfect way to add some flavour to a refreshing glass of water while you’re out in the garden (or a cheeky gin once the kids are in bed!)
Al fresco dining accessories
The warmer weather calls for spending a lot more time in our gardens, and if you’ve not already, you’re more than likely going to look into sprucing it up. You might want to consider purchasing a decent barbecue or pizza oven for al fresco dining opportunities.

If you’ve not already, you’ll want to invest in some outdoor seating for the oodles of time you’re going to be spending in the garden, but don’t worry you don’t need to spend a fortune! Recently, we’ve seen that a some of our customers have been upcycling and using palettes with cushions on top to form an ideal outdoor seating area.
Ideal Home has shared a step-by-step guide on how to create palette garden furniture - and if you’re looking for a little inspiration have a search on Instagram and get creative!
For the nights when you just don’t want to go back inside, make sure you have some outdoor lights to keep you company. These Ivy Solar String Lights from Argos are perfect for those who wish to add a touch of greenery to their fence, and for those looking to light up their seating area, this LED Solar-Powered Pendant Lamp from Ikea, which can hang from your parasol, is ideal.
Solar lights placed around your garden border provide depth to your garden and this Solar Dancing Flame Torch Pack from Argos creates a subtle glow to your garden by emitting a flickering candle effect, almost like a real flame.
