Top tips for downsizing

Estate agents Savills say about 55,000 households downsize each year. So, if you’re think of releasing equity in your home and buying a fabulous new Keepmoat one, here are some tips to help you.

Use floor plans to work out how much space you have

You’ll find detailed floors plan here on our website and available to pick up in our sales offices. They’re a great way to work out how your furniture fits in your new home and you can compare these to the room sizes in your current home to get a good idea of the space available. It will also help you decide what items you keep and ones you don’t.

What can you live without?

You might not need, or have space, for all your things. It’s one of the realities of downsizing, but many see this de-cluttering as a hugely positive process. Start with the obvious things. If you’re moving from a 4 bedroom home to a 2 bedroom, you won’t need as many beds, wardrobes etc.

We’d suggest going through each room and deciding what you want to keep and what you can live without. Then all you need to do is work out the best way to get rid of what you don’t need.

Sell it. Dump it. Donate it?

With Gumtree, eBay and the many other auction websites, it’s so easy to sell the things you’re not taking with you. If you want to make sure your possessions go to a good home, you can always offer them to friends and family. Many charities will happily pick up items of furniture you can’t drop off yourself. And for everything else you can live without, take it to your local council recycling centre.
