Students from a Leeds school took part in a construction skills workshop, organised by Bramall Construction.
The workshop exercise at Pudsey Grangefield School involved building a four metre high tetrahedron, a pyramid like structure with a triangular base, using only wooden sticks and rubber bands.
Two groups of students from Year 12 competed against time, waste
and building standards. A site manager and project manager were
nominated from each team and a health and safety brief took place
prior to the exercise.
The main aim of the exercise was to inform students on how
versatile the construction industry is, and to help them consider
the different career paths available to them, along with working on
the pupils' team building and communication skills.
Rohan, 16, one of the students who took part in the workshop, said:
"The building exercise was great fun. I liked the competition
and having to consider the different elements involved, working
against time and the other team."
Steph, another student who took part, said: "I thought the workshop was fun and exciting. I liked the experience of building a tetrahedron as it was something I'd never done before."
Employees from Bramall were on hand to direct the workshop and explain the wide range of careers available in the construction industry, including accounts, marketing, IT and administration, in order to show it's not just about bricks and mortar.
Kevin Adlington, Project Manager at Bramall Construction, said: "We are always keen to work with schools in the areas around our sites.
"This exercise has helped the students become aware of the different career opportunities available to them and learn how the construction industry is crucial to the UK's economy.
"You never know, we may have met a future Project Manager today!"
The teams were presented with goodie bags and chocolates.
Bramall Construction is currently building 45 new homes on Waterloo Road, Pudsey, on behalf of Yorkshire Housing.
